Should I do a studio or lifestyle session?

Often people wonder which session type is best for them, studio or lifestyle.

Lifestyle is a very popular and casually used term these days. Sometimes people think they want a lifestyle session, but aren’t always sure exactly what that means. So hopefully the info below can help you better understand the difference and help you decide which one is best for you and your family!

In-Studio Session

In studio is pretty obvious, it happens in my studio. My studio is in the Heights and you will get a fully posed session with access to a full closet of accessories and backdrops for your baby. In-studio sessions are more popular for many reasons.

  1. You don't have to clean your home just after having a baby

  2. The environment is more controlled (lighting, temperature, equipment, etc.) in the studio so you will get a more consistent look.

  3. If you have other kids, I know from experience that often the little ones behave a little better on someone else's turf.

  4. You get full access to all the fun props, backdrops, wraps and accessories.

Here are example photos of a posed studio session.

In-home Lifestyle Session

I also offer in-home lifestyle sessions but it does not include props, wraps or backdrops. It is focused mostly on candid and natural photos in your home. They are more casual and much quicker as we don’t wait for the baby to fall asleep and there is no “posing” of the baby. It’s more of a slice of life in your home with your new baby. Lifestyle may be better for you if:

  1. You would like to do photos later (older than 2-3 weeks)

  2. Love the look of your home /nursery and would like to have it showcased as the background

  3. You have pets and you would like them to be in your photos

  4. Are weary about leaving your home with a newborn. (keep in mind that these are the precautions I take in the studio)

Here are some example photos of in-home lifestyle sessions.

Lifestyle look in the studio!

If you like the idea of a lifestyle session because of it's casual look and not necessarily b/c you want to capture newborn life with your home as the backdrop, then we can still get the casual look of a lifestyle session in the controlled environment of the studio. Here are a few sample photos of more casual photos in the studio.

You do not have to choose between lifestyle and posed in the studio. I do a mix of these in your session!
